Third Annual Chicago Seal of Biliteracy -- Awards Ceremony

Yes! The Awards Ceremony for winners of the Chicago Seal of Biliteracy was held Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at TUOE Local 399 Hall. This year, the third year of this Illinois State program, awards in English and a second language were won by 1,300 high school students from at least 77 Chicago Public and Charter high schools. But this is the first year several students won the Seal in not two -- but in three languages. Also for the first time, the Chicago Public Schools had a winner in English and Sign Language.

But that's not all! For the first time, special recognition awards were won by 5th and 8th grade students from 54 schools. These young people are well on the pathway to the Seal of Biliteracy.

Bilingual reporter Erika Maldonado from Univision was superb as MC for the program. Dr. Janice Jackson, Chief Education Officer, was present to deliver a warm, energizing message to students and families.

Our thanks go to the organizers of this joyful event: Mr. Luis Narvaez and staff of the Office of Language and Cultural Education. Very special thanks, too, to CPS teachers and supportive parents and families.
